Meet Me at the Rink!

One of the wonderful things about inservice days is that we are not restricted to a schedule that has our children coming and going to school throughout the day. We are able to plan some experiences away from the centre. Today we took a group that wanted to skate, to Bord-Aire community centre. What a beautiful day to spend the morning at the rink!
Getting 22 children ready to hit the ice is no easy task, thankfully we had some experienced children in the dressing room that were willing to help out their friends!!
We were all so excited to get on the ice and show our friends our moves!

What a workout! It didn't take long before we were sweating and needing a breather!
Finally, no trip to the rink would be complete without a game of shinny!
Selecting the teams is always an exciting moment! Waiting to see who your team mates will be is nerve-wracking.

We would like to thank our special parents for making it possible for us to use the facility at the rink (you know who you are), it was very much appreciated!!

Hip Hop and Strength

Our children have been huge into 'hip hop' dancing and showing off their natural athletic abilities...
Their strength is amazing! They motivate and inspire each other to try new moves and exercises.

The warmer the weather the better!

With this mild weather, it's so nice to be able to play outside for long periods of time and not freeze your fingers off. We had kids playing everywhere out in the adventure playground, and having a blast! I find when the weather is warmer the kids are more likely to run around and play. We had "monsters" chasing the children, snowman building and even a snowball fight!

Do you want to build a snowman?

Because it's getting warmer outside we have the perfect snowman/snowball making weather. Our children spent their afternoon making giant snowballs and snowmen. A group of boys worked together to make 3 giant snowballs. After awhile the snowballs got too big to push by themselves, so they worked together as a team to make them even bigger!

'Super Pool After School' & Board Games Club- Week 3

This week we decided to learn a new game called 9 ball (also known as the money game)under the tutelage of Mr. Doty.  We also got some pointers on how to break the balls more powerfully. Mr. Reyes gave us a demonstration, and fortunately for us, he sank the 8 ball off the break. Winner, winner, chicken dinner!  Har har!  We played a Winnipeg version of monopoly game called 'Winnipeg On Board' to find out who owns this city.  The game was produced by MTC in 2004 as a fundraiser, and has local businesses and attractions unique to our city.

Student vs Teachers Dodgeball

We had an epic dodgeball battle today after lunch, with the children winning 5-2!

Here are the Top 10 Health Benefits of Dodgeball:
  • A great form of anaerobic exercise: The short bursts of sprinting involved in a game of dodgeball can improve cardiovascular health by lowering blood pressure and pulse, improving circulation and burning calories. In this manner, dodgeball can constitute a form of interval training, with players running for brief periods of time.
  • Increases agility and balance: Players running across a court don’t just run; they also have to dodge balls. This can improve agility as players adjust their bodies at a rapid pace. It can also help players improve their balance.
  • Improves strength training: A standard dodgeball court is 30 feet across, and players must throw large balls a moderate distance to successfully hit members of the other team. This requires strength in the shoulders, back, abs and arms, and repeatedly throwing the ball can help build muscle endurance.
  • Improves hand-eye coordination: Both ball dodgers and ball throwers have to have good hand-eye coordination. To successfully hit other players, throwers need to coordinate their throws not only with the other players’ current location, but also with their anticipated location when the ball lands.
  • Promotes weight loss: The object of the game is to avoid getting hit so you can stay on the floor and help your team. The longer you stay “alive,” the more calories you’ll burn. According to HealthStatus.com, a 155-pound person will burn 186 calories during 30 minutes of playing dodgeball.
  • Improves flexibility: When trying to dodge the ball, you are constantly twisting and turning, bending up and down and jumping around. Over time, your flexibility improves, which can also carry over into daily activities as well.
  • Stress reliever: You can feel a bad day slip away bit by bit with every throw. Also, it’s fun! Laughter is the best stress reliever, so get on the court, have fun and laugh out loud.
  • Develops fast reflexes: Dodging a flying ball coming straight at you takes some really fast reflex skills. Working on your reflexive skills can be beneficial while practicing other sports as well.
  • Builds teamwork: Working with your team to take down the opponents is a great way to not only learn and work with others but also gain leadership skills.
  • Fun and uplifting: Dodgeball is also a fun way to meet new people or just enjoy a day of fun with friends and family.

'Super Pool After School' & Board Games Club- Week Two

This week, Mr Reyes taught the children how to use a tool called the granny stick, which could also be called a bridge or crutch.  The children also learned about using different angles to help with their bank shots.  We also worked on sportsmanship and learning to work as a team as the children were paired up during their game.  It is great to see their confidence building each week.

Who needs sleds?!

Our children use their own creativity to have fun during outside time at lunch, discovering that their bellies are even better then sleds!

Children show virtues in their daily interactions, without even realizing it!

'Super Pool After School' & Board Games Club- Week One

We had an 'Super' week of billiards!  We started off learning about the history of pool and where the game of pool derived from (Europe and croquet, a long time ago). We also learned some fun facts about a professional world champion billiard player named Efren Reyes -no relation to Mr Reyes (Har Har). While the children were learning the basics of pool, which included racking, the importance of chalk and body positioning; the others focused their energy on board games, such as Connect Four and Scrabble with Mr. Doty.

February 5th In-service

On Friday, February 5th school age 2 had an in-service. We all split up in to our smaller groups and had activities planned for the morning. Ms. Penner

Group A had a sports day and played in the gym. The children who did not want to play sports did arts and crafts.

Group B made clay creations and had a mustache contest to see who could keep their mustache on the longest. Two of the girls won and kept their mustache on all day.

Group C made projector stories with an overhead projector.

Group D had a smoothie challenge where they tasted smoothies that they did not know what was in them.  Then they got to make and name their own smoothies in groups.

We all had a great day and had tons of fun!!!
