Cooking Club- Week 1

Cooking Club- Week 1, Wednesday Group

The children were excited to begin cooking club. It is as much about learning to cook as getting to be a part of something special. Some children may not feel comfortable joining extra-curricular activities through their schools. Here, in school age two, being a part of a smaller group can instill a sense of security and confidence.
These children will bond through their common interest, cooking. We have grade 1-6 children work together to make a common dish. I demonstrated safe cutting techniques and discussed the nutritional value in the ingredients: whole wheat tortilla shells, cheese, red, yellow and orange peppers, turkey and even sour cream. Since all four food groups are represented in this activity we discussed the Canada Food Guide. The children know which food group that each item belongs to and that it is important to have a healthy balanced diet. Everyone contributed by cutting peppers and turkey. They then got to choose what they wanted on their very own quesadillas :)
